Discover L'ulivo Charing Cross - Italian Restaurant

Right in the heart of central London, just steps from the buzz of the Strand and Trafalgar Square, L'ulivo Charing Cross - Italian Restaurant at 23 Villiers St, London WC2H 6ND, United Kingdom feels like a small slice of Italy tucked into the city. I first stopped by after a long afternoon exploring nearby theatres, and since then, it has become one of those dependable spots I recommend whenever someone asks for authentic Italian food near Charing Cross station.

The location couldn’t be more convenient. Whether you’re commuting, sightseeing, or heading to a West End show, it’s an easy walk. That convenience alone makes it popular, but what keeps people coming back is the menu. It covers all the Italian classics you’d expect-fresh pasta, wood-fired pizza, risotto, seafood, and indulgent desserts like tiramisu-yet it avoids feeling generic. The dishes reflect regional Italian cooking rather than a watered-down version for tourists.

On my last visit, I ordered the seafood linguine. The pasta was cooked al dente, just as the Italian Culinary Institute recommends for preserving texture and digestibility. The sauce tasted clean and balanced, with fresh tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil tying everything together rather than overwhelming the seafood. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly prioritize fresh ingredients and authenticity when choosing where to eat, and that’s exactly the impression I got here. Nothing felt rushed or mass-produced.

The pizza deserves special mention. Made with a thin, crisp base and baked at high temperature, it follows the traditional Neapolitan approach endorsed by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana. The Margherita is simple but impressive-fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato sauce that tastes bright rather than sugary. It’s proof that quality ingredients matter more than excessive toppings.

Service is another strong point. During one busy Friday evening, the restaurant was nearly full, yet the staff remained attentive and relaxed. They explained the specials clearly and even offered wine pairing suggestions without being pushy. That kind of professionalism makes a difference. Hospitality research from Cornell University consistently highlights that attentive service significantly impacts repeat visits and positive reviews, and judging by the steady stream of returning customers I’ve noticed, that research holds true here.

Speaking of reviews, online feedback across major dining platforms consistently praises the restaurant for its cozy atmosphere and reliable food quality. While no place is perfect-service can slow slightly during peak pre-theatre hours-the overall experience remains solid. In my experience, waiting a few extra minutes is a fair trade for freshly prepared dishes rather than pre-cooked meals.

The interior strikes a balance between casual diner and traditional trattoria. Warm lighting, closely set tables, and the hum of conversation create a lively yet comfortable vibe. It’s suitable for a relaxed date night, a family dinner, or even a quick lunch meeting. I’ve visited with friends, colleagues, and family members, and each time the atmosphere adapted naturally to the occasion.

One practical detail worth noting is portion size. The servings are generous without being excessive. If you’re planning multiple courses-starter, main, and dessert-it’s wise to pace yourself. The bruschetta makes a great light beginning, and the homemade panna cotta is worth saving room for.

In terms of pricing, it aligns with central London standards, but the value feels fair considering the location and ingredient quality. Transparency in the menu pricing builds trust, and there are no surprise add-ons that sometimes frustrate diners in busy tourist areas.

Overall, this Italian restaurant stands out because it combines authenticity, accessibility, and consistent execution. From fresh pasta and crisp pizza to welcoming service and a prime London location, it delivers exactly what you hope for when craving proper Italian cuisine in the city.

  • Food great, deserts were still frozen when served, we had to returned some. Prices above moderate.

  • Been here many times once or twice a year we’ve been with our grandchildren and children. My husband son and I had a pre meal and drinks before theatre and as always never fails, staff polite very quick service and food is like being in Italy very delicious

  • Popped in here on NYE without a booking and was pleasantly surprised that they could fit two of us in easily! The food was a bit of a mixed bag but mostly great. I had the prawn spaghetti which was delicious, though my partner’s risotto was a tad on the salty side. My Pornstar Martini was exactly what you’d expect—really nice and hit the spot. Service was super quick for the main course, though it slowed down a lot for dessert; I had to eventually ask for the menu. There were so many good-looking options! I went for the chocolate sponge with praline and almond. It wasn’t quite what I expected—more like a thick mousse covered in white chocolate with a rich mini cake inside—but it was yummy and I finished the whole thing. Everyone was lovely, though one member of staff started hovering a bit while we were finishing our dessert which felt a little rushed. Overall, a solid experience!

  • When we were traveling, we passed by this restaurant. The area was extremely busy, full of people. At the time, we were desperately looking for a restroom but couldn’t find one, so we ran into this place to use theirs. Afterward, we sat down and ordered some desserts and drinks, and we were completely blown away. The dessert was incredible—our friends couldn’t stop praising it. After the first bite, we instantly fell in love. It’s such a pity that we already had dinner reservations elsewhere, so we couldn’t stay for dinner here. But the dessert was absolutely amazing. We really hope to come back in the future.

  • Lovely place which i got to after visiting one of their other branches, so mysrlf and partner were waiting in different locations .its worth noting this even though they are less than 10 minutes apart. Service is efficient and food is good. Definitely a location yo consuder if houre gallery visiting or on the way to/from the theatre. My partner had a beef dish which was lovely with flesh tender and falling off the bone. I had risotto which was lovely with the right ricey stickiness of a good risotto. Dessert was assorted sorbet which hit the spot. Cost is as expected for London's Theatreland location

First night we did the lasagna and the second night we did chicken and pizza . The portions were a good sized and you won’t leave here feeling hungry. Would definitely come back and we didn’t

  • L’ulivo is a fantastic spot for authentic Italian food in the heart of London. The dishes are fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared — especially the pasta and pizzas. The service is warm and attentive, and the atmosphere feels cozy without being crowded. Perfect for a relaxed dinner or a pre-theatre meal. Highly recommend for anyone looking for honest, well-made Italian cuisine in a great location!

  • Absolute fantastic Italian restaurant. It starts with the smell of garlic and hot pizza when You are getting closer to the entrance, it continues with lovely atmosphere all over the place, it increases with obliging people working here and it culminates in great, tasty food! Very good variety of Italian food, same goes for wine and beer. So if You are in the area and even feel the slightest hint of hunger, You should definitely stop here!
